by hand by measure by hour we are asked to choose how much to see of the world

Window blinds … well named. We stay in a place where the blinds are embedded in the windows, a fierce protection against the fierce light. Every one of the blinds must be hand turned in one little corner to open, a dial to open the lids to the sky.

Is there anything else I need to figure out? Is there anything else that’s needed as the thin weak fire morning sun comes through the tops of windows long lidded – by hand by measure by hour we are asked to choose how much to see of the world.

Mostly, I choose to cocoon. It could be a prison house, how strange it is to be kept from the friluftsliv (free-air-life). I shut out the smoke from the fire, and also the butte and mountains. I shut out the birds, the spreading oak. It takes so much energy to run through the home, every window, and open the sky, or pull down the air.

Conferences: I come to beautiful places then engage in strange rituals of sitting, hour on hour, in rooms without windows. In one, only the top corner of the room reveals the friluftsliv-freeairlife. Released from eight in thirteen days of full-day room-being,

Is it an affront to the windowless body to get up and dance for a minute, then immediately sit back and have people talk for hours in room tombs?

Turn(Around and)Around

Stuck in(one)place once
now every place and no
place is belonging to me

World between worlds
where do you(two)dwell?

Sands of the ocean
at my back sky above
what is what seems(three)seeming
space and solid(and me)
changing places
resting now in sky
what is what now

(Four)Everything that moves
is Spirit Incarnate
we know--con-science--we are not solid
not even attached but
rooted somehow else

Things we make/take are part
of us and yet we(five)are entire
free naked whole without
any of these creature objects
or with, the same

(Six)th sense
I rest
(Here)

two days of thunder

my nine
year old
friend asks
where it
comes from
does it go
sky down or
ground up?

i don't
know.

i know the noise
comes after
the light.

i know
that friday the
rainbow rises
from where the
air split with
white.

through the
window at
namaste

restaurant.
coming here
last year jan
uary my
friend and i
are crashed
into by a two
fisted cell phone
talker,
zoom.

he split
my shoulder
with speed
like a light.
crash like
thunder.

i know the noise
comes after
the light.

my nine
year old
friend asks
where it
comes from
does it go
sky down or
ground up?

i still
don't know...
maybe both

maybe when you're in the
middle of the strike
in the tin
tinn
ab
ulation

there is
no up
or down.
just crash
just zounds
just bright.

Prompt: Part of the Mystery -or- music in the morning

Dansch, 2011, Mystery Rain

I woke up this morning with this portion of the song "Fall Down as the Rain"  going through my head...

Jennifer Berezan's rendering of Joe Crookston's "Fall Down as the Rain"

When that eagle learns to fly
and flutter from that tree,
I'm going to turn myself around again
Part of the mystery

Part of the mystery
Part of the mystery
Turn myself around again
Part of the mystery

This week, write about turning yourself around again as __what?___, or about turning around again as part of the mystery. I know it can be difficult to discuss the numenous/ineffable, that's part of the Imunuri poetry challenge this week, to write about the ineffable.

Another possible direction: the first line of the poem/song talks about turning around and falling down as the rain.

And/or, write a poem riffing on a song that comes to you on waking.

Enjoy!
